About DD HD: India’s national broadcaster Doordarshan has launched the country’s first indigenous high definition channel on its Direct To Home Platform, DD Direct Plus, on September 1 to broadcast the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which would be shared free of cost with other DTH operators.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has given the TV production and broadcast rights to Britain-based company, SIS (Satellite Information Service Live), at a contract price of Rs.2.46 billion. The company will provide all production facilities and personnel to cover 14 events across 12 venues in Delhi, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.
To view the high definition signal, your television should also be HD compatible. Or else, the viewers will have to buy a special set top box to make their television high definition compatible.
Once the CWG are over, Doordarshan are already developing content in HD format for DD India. This will be the first feeder for DD HD. Also, DD are working on an arrangement with Discovery channel. They have a lot of content in HD. Some of their content coming out of India or focused on India could be used. In addition, DD will have the Delhi and Mumbai studios HD-ready withing a year.
